I am a fan of photography, especially street photography. I feel that there's something genuine and unique about that style that are much different from other fields. One example is photos of products, especially non-tech ones. They tend to look the same but when I saw the work for Arrels Barcelona I felt that it was fresh. Maybe it's because I am not so familiar with this particular field however I love the simplicity despite how colorful they are. Ion Lucin shared an incredible project exploring light and darkness, I'd say more darkness than light but the result is fantastic. The minimalist representation of objects in black and white with subtle animations create an eerie yet elegant effect. Jean-Michel Verbeeck is a multidisciplinary Art Director from Antwerp, Belgium. His passion is to explore the relationships between art and design with a fresh and innovative approach. The images reject the traditional boundaries and explore new ways of experiencing visual imagery. The Studies in Abstract & Circular compositions is a great example of that. The amazing people from Folch Studio put together an incredible editorial design project for Metal Magazine, a fashion publication for a younger demographic. As I've said many times before, editorial design is such an inspiration for me. I love the way designers play with the grid, imagery and typography. For this project you can see some details that give a super fresh look, like the images breaking the grid and almost superimposing the text. Moving away from the young fashion publication for young people, Metal’s visual language turned more mature and sophisticated, claiming a more conceptual idea of fashion. The new format, art direction and typographic treatment symbolised this transition. While creating a strong attitude and strengthening the magazines structure, design almost disappears, creating with its absence a recognisable look and feel. "Metal came out from this new zeitgeist and contributed to the necessary creation of a new format, where content and concepts were finally dealt with in an unprecedented way in fashion fields. Some of the photographers who turned their noses up at this choice, were later aspiring to see their work published in such a fresh and experimental framework. Images were strongly enhanced by an innovative and playful choice of papers, something not really common in editorial design at that time: the harmonic play between the organicity of the offset paper and the cold white of the coated ones was spread across the bound and stapled publication. I am not the biggest fan of food photography, perhaps because of all the culinary books I've seen and they tend to always look the same with some macros and depth of field. That said, there are some cases that the quality of the composition, colors and treatment really deserve some attention. That's the case of the project shared by Ayman Abbas titled Fresh Food Market. The project is a collection of great photos of food shot from an aerial vantage point. The colors and composition are super sharp and so vivid it makes me hungry just thinking about the imagery. I'm really making a pointed effort to improve my photo skills so will have to try to shoot something edible leveraging this style pretty soon. Two of my great passions in life are traveling and photography. I believe that traveling broadens one’s view of the world. Experiencing other cultures, meeting people from other communities and countries and seeing the beauty, and sometimes ugliness, of the world has helped me understand that all of our lives are at once interconnected and individual. I think I have never posted anything about jewelry design, maybe I never paid much attention and to be honest with you I am still a bit of unaware about this subject. That said, I saw this project on Behance posted by Dean Elliott that caught my attention more about the set design than the jewelry. The images are quite stylish with nice geometric compositions with a bit of a retro feel. Dean was born in Durban, South Africa. While completing his degree in Fine Arts Photography and lecturing part time at the Durban University of Technology, he serviced outside clients for commissioned work. Soon after his studies he acquired a position at a studio and became the Senior Photographer as well as Technical Advisor for Sinar South Africa, which has taken him to places like Cologne, Bangkok and around South Africa. As we approach the end of the year I always like to take some time to reflect. This year was an important one, not that the others weren't, but living in a new place, a new commute and various other changes on the personal level make this year stand out. I have been trying to manage all of that with Abduzeedo and have been thinking about what the future of Abduzeedo will look like including the new design. The B&O Play - Design for music project created by Robbert Schefman and Ronald Gijezen has a bunch of cool things that I think make for a cool project to be featured and certainly serves as an inspiration for me in my continued endeavor to evolve the site. This project brings a lot of trends that are very common to the forefront. Horizontal sections with different colors and stunning imagery are just a couple to note. Some points of the layout really caught my attention, the mobile and tablet version feel refined and elegant. At the same time they are part of the system and play quite well with the desktop counterpart. The grid seems to work at that size, but this is something that really bothers me about this type of project, you cannot see how it looks at higher resolutions where there's much more real estate available. That said, the 2 columns with gorgeous imagery always work, especially with minimalist styles. The design feels authentic and forceful with no tweaks or over-emphasised elements. The design profile is minimalistic and sleek, intended to both complement and enhance the B&O products Heres a list of things that I quite like: Imagery and typography: very elegant and refined. Footer design Grid system Tablet and mobile view look great, at least the 2 images shown Things I am not quite sure: Design does't look as flexible, especially with big screens. The horizontal sections seem a bit overkill. Too much change of colors creating a stripe effect. Some design lack a bit of contrast between imagery and light typography (I like the light typography though) Anyways, this was just a little critique, something I will probably do more during next year to exercise my writing skills and further expression of my opinions. Melting liquids like the Terminator 2 killer android is something that will forever inspire me. The work that TAVO put together for their first solo exhibit in Chile features this effect along with impossible geometries and a beautiful 80s color palette. For me, it is a feast for the eyes. Photoshop is an amazing tool and has changed the way images are created. Sometimes it's very difficult to know if an image was retouched or done in Photoshop. Coca-Cola Teamed up with Nuno Jerónimo and Tiago Canas Mendes from the “O Escritório” agency I’ve been responsible for the art direction and identity design of this campaign held by Coca-Cola Portugal and the Portuguese soccer team Benfica — Camarata Coca-Cola (Coca-Cola Dormitory). The idea behind this “feel-good” campaign was to turn the stadium luxury corporate box into a dormitory for fans. Boosters could apply at Coke website and win the chance to spend 24 hours in the dorm, spending the night in there and also watching a soccer match with the privileged view the location offers. I believe we all, designers, love typography, it's much more than choosing the right typeface it's all about understanding and playing with the layout and fonts in order to solve a communication problem the best way possible. There is also those who mix typefaces and funny ideas to come up with very original results such as the guys over at SerialCut. Serial Cut is a Madrid based studio, established in 1999 by Sergio del Puerto, working on a wide variety of worldwide projects, but focussing mainly on Art Direction. Check out some really cool projects with very interesting usage of types. Image and type are a great combination that we like to use on all the projects we work on. Typography plays an important role in the end product. Inspiration comes from current and past decades, but we always review it and renew it, bringing it into today's perspective with an actual look.
