South Bank Tower Illustration

South Bank Tower Illustration

I feel that since flat became the new trend we started to see more of the same style of work, sometimes making it impossible to decipher if they were from different illustrators. Of course there are exceptions to every rule and that's the case of the illustrations created by Tom Haugomat for the South Bank Tower. The simplicity yet unique perspective and style set the work apart from the rest. Tom Haugomat is an illustrator based in Paris, France. His work have been shown in publications like XXI, Le Monde and many others. He also works as an animated film director with Bruno Mangyoku. Unique Work of Dan Matutina

We have posted and shared some of the amazing work of Dan Matutina, a designer and illustrator based in the Philippines. His style is quite unique and when you see an artwork with that style you can undoubtedly recognize it as Dan's work. It's a mix of clean vectors with dirty textures, even the forms have this contrast which gives his work such a unique character. For this post we selected some of the most recent pieces from his portfolio, check it out. I love mixing handmade & digital, clean & dirty, old & modern aesthetics. Illustrator Showcase: Vic Bell

Illustrator Showcase: Vic Bell

We have been featuring a lot of projects and posts about things we get inspired by, however I noticed that we haven't posted about the talent behind some of these projects. Showcasing the work of designers has always been one of the tenets of this blog and we will get back to that tradition. For this post I would love to share with you the work of Vic Bell, a super talented illustrator and designer from the North of England. I love her illustrations and style, they have a very modern visual language with thick strokes and vibrant colors. Enough of my jibber jabber and jump to her work after the break. I'm an illustrator and designer from the North of England, I'm 25, I have a passion for good movies, a cup of tea and all things vector. I've been designing for around 8 years now but still find myself learning and growing on a daily basis. I spend most of my time working with an amazing team at Articulate, when I'm not rockin' it with those guys I work with some amazing clients from around the world, I've had the pleasure of working with such companies like Engine Yard, Unroll.Me and InVision. Vector Polygonal Background - Illustrator Tutorials

Vector Polygonal Background - Illustrator Tutorials

A couple of weeks ago I posted an image with a polygonal background that I discovered on the Pattern Library website and got some requests to recreate so herein lies my attempt. So in this tutorial I will show you how to create a vector polygonal pattern using Illustrator and the Pattern make feature. The process is quite simple but there are some details that are very important to make sure your pattern is tileable. Step 1 Open Illustrator and create a new document. With the Rectangle Tool create a square like the image below. Step 2 Duplicate the square by holding Option+Shift. Make sure they snap with no space between them. Step 3 Create a grid by repeating the step 2 process. Step 4 With the Direct Selection Tool (A) select the top and bottom points on the same column. Them move them to any direction. It's very important to do that for these points because that will make sure that the illustration will be tillable. Step 5 Here's the outside points that will connect when you create the pattern. Step 6 For the internal points you can do whatever you want. If you want smooth polygons don't move them too much. Also if you want to add more square to your grid that will allow you to give more details to your background. Step 7 Add some colors, I used greyscale because I can change the hues in Photoshop later on. Step 8 Select polygons that have the same color and duplicate them in place. Then go to Window>Swatch Libraries>Patterns>Basic_Graphics_Lines. Use one of the horizontal lines presets. Step 9 Select the image you created and go to Object>Expand. After that group the shapes and go to Object>Pattern>Make. Select Size Tile to Art and Move Tile with Art. After that change the H and V spacing until you have no space between the tiles. Step 10 Click done and you will have a nice poliygonal pattern to play with. Step 11 In Photoshop, create a new document. I am using 2880x1800 pixels. Copy a big rectangle with the pattern in Illustrator and paste it in Photoshop. Step 12 Add a new layer on top and change the color. After that change the Blend Mode to Overlay. You can try as many colors you want by doing that. You can also play with the Levels to reduce the contrast . Conclusion Add your logo and you are good to go. The process is quite simple, it's just about paying attention to the details and you will have a nice wallpaper for your laptop or new iPhone ;) Download Illustrator File Download the Illustrator file used for this tutorial

2014 LabelExpo America Illustrations

2014 LabelExpo America Illustrations

Brian Miller put together a beautiful series of illustrations for the 2014 LabelExpo America. The style, a kind of vintage-y, mid-century look with an incredible sense of motion. The colors are also spot on and these illustrations are probably some of the coolest I've seen in quite a long time. Here are the final illustrations I did for the 2014 LabelExpo Americas series. The idea was to capture moments outdoor with each character in unique environments defined by the client. I really enjoyed the challenge of exploring and drawing environments which I haven't tackled before, and was surprised which ones turned out to be my favorite (who knew drawing deserts could be so fun!) Brian Miller is the owner artist and illustrator behind the Orlin Culture Shop AKA OCS. His portfolio is full of incredible work and definitely worth checking it out.
